Professor Anand Kumar, a distinguished and globally well-known health psychologist, scholar, academician, educator, researcher and a teacher par excellence, formally retired in 2016 as Professor and Head from Department of Psychology, Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi after serving the University for 38 years which he had joined in 1978 as Lecturer in Psychology. In addition to publishing more than hundreds of scientific papers in reputed national and international journals, he successfully completed 2 research projects at the international and 4 projects at national level.
His career is marked with so many distinctive high impact contributions in the professional and scientific community. He has been invited as keynote speaker in academic forums both in India and abroad for sharing his tremendous knowledge and experience to address the professional communities which included Harvard University, Boston, U.S.A, ;University of Cambridge, England, U,K,; University of Oxford, U,K,; Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia ; The University of Melbourne, International Studies University, Shanghai, China; National University of Singapore, Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany; International Olympic Training Centre, San Diego,U.S.A.; International Institute of Stress Management, Tokyo, Japan; University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada; Sports Medicine and Research Centre, Singapore; National University of Malaysia, Korea Sports Science Institute, Seoul, South Koria; Institute of Medical Psychology, Hamburg,West Germany; The Princess Margaret Migraine Trust, London,U.K. and Inter faculty of Human Movement Science, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
He has made significant mark in the field of sports psychology in India by serving as President of Sports Psychology Association from 2002-2006. He represented Government of India as official Sport Psychologist of the Ministry of Sports in 1988 Seoul Olympics and 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Prof. Anand Kumar laid the foundation of Indian Academy of Health Psychology (IAHP) in 2015 to serve the people of India through the academy with a vision to improve health and well-being by creating awareness/spreading knowledge about this field. He is tirelessly working to organize local, state, national and international level workshops, training programs, seminars and conferences of health psychology.
Currently, he is also the Honorary Director of Asha-deep Institute of Mental Health in Varanasi which he established in 1997. He started the institute to offer psychological counselling and psychotherapy to meet the needs of residents of Varanasi. In 2007, he was conferred “Kashi Ratna” for his outstanding services in the area of psychotherapy by the Indian Association of Journalists.
He has been proudly honored with distinctions and awards by many national and international organizations and associations which include the Best Speaker Award in 1983 by World Congress of Social Psychiatry, Osaka, Japan. Life Fellowship in 1983 by World Association for Social Psychiatry, Paris, France, Man of achievement award in 1991 by International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England, U.K. for his distinguished services to Clinical, Health and Sports Psychology. Man of Achievement award in 2016 by Gautam Buddha University, Greater Noida, India for his outstanding contribution in Health Psychology,“Mental Health Professional Honor” by the Manas Charitable Trust for Mental Health, Ahmedabad, Gujarat in 2020 for his dedicated services during the adverse times of COVID-19 period in India. Recently, he was conferred “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2021 for his outstanding contribution in Health Psychology.
